About Us

Lingfield Scribes was created as the vision of our founder member & teacher, Sue Cox. The group came together to fill a gap created by the reduction of art and craft classes in adult education provision.

Our founding members led by Sue, included Margaret Grant & Lisa Davis all of whom had a life-long interest in calligraphy.

The emphasis of the group was & remains to encourage anyone interested in calligraphy to begin learning, continue to develop new skills & to simply enjoy the process & have fun!

Sue came to calligraphy after a career in an office & as a potter.  She picked up her pens and found that she enjoyed the process of creating letterforms.  She studied with some of the leading British calligraphers and honed her skills over many years.

This led to her teaching classes in adult education settings which is where many of our current membership took lessons with her and she passed on her skills and joy of calligraphy to us.

Sue made the decision to retire from teaching in adult education and started teaching private classes at the Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre, with many of her former students following her there.

Then came the creation of the Lingfield Scribes.  The group held many full day workshops throughout the year, and Sue remained a teacher alongside guest tutors.

Sue remained our teacher, mentor & friend for many years, sharing her enthusiasm & inspiring us all to continue learning.  Lingfield Scribes & its members are her legacy.

Lingfield Scribes is run by a committee of volunteers for the community and is a not for profit organisation.

Our thanks to Jane Tomkins for her generous support in funding this website in memory of her mother Sue, the founder of Lingfield Scribes.
